Before there was Raskels Rescue, there was a dog who didnt belong to Carol.
Or at leastnot officially.
His name was Gus, a basset hound who lived down the street and had quite the reputation. Around the neighborhood, he was known as a bit of a scampwandering, roaming, always finding his way into places he probably shouldnt be. And somehow, he always found his way to Carols house.
He would slip right under the gate like he had been invited, make himself comfortable, and settle in as if he lived there. It became such a regular occurrence that when Carol and her husband had friends over, people would casually ask, When did you get a dog?
They hadnt.
Gus just kept showing up.
And Carol fell in love.
There was something about himhis independence, his personality, the way he chose to be there. That connection stayed with her, and before long, she found herself searching for a basset hound of her own.
Thats when she found Raskel.
Raskel had already been through multiple adoptions that hadnt worked out. He had been passed over, returned, and given chances that didnt quite stick. But when he came into Carols life, it was clear he was exactly where he was supposed to be.
Despite his name, Raskel was a good boy: smart, funny, and quietly exceptional.
In fact, he went on to win three gold medals at the Oregon Basset Gamesa reflection of just how special he was.
But the story doesnt end there.
Because Gusthe original scampwas still around.
The two became fast friends. And while Raskel may have been the more sensible and less adventurous one, Gus had a bit of influence. Before long, Raskel had learned a few tricks he hadnt known before Like how to escape his yard.
Together, they got into their fair share of mischiefpartners in crime, slipping out, exploring, and returning like nothing had happened.
It was chaotic. It was funny. And it was unforgettable.
But more than anything, it was the beginning of something bigger.
Because Raskelthis amazing dog who had been abandoned and overlooked, who deserved a second chance, and who brought such love and joy into Carols lifeis what inspired Raskels Rescue.
A place built on one simple belief:
The right home doesnt just save an animalit allows both the animal and the person who loves them to truly shine.
